im curious about the creative process with ideas from people who actually write comedy seriously

Im not a professional. But I write silly shorts at times. I wrote a few super short funny situations for a girl from africa that needed English content. I get most of my inspiration from work (im a nurse) or social media posts.

It’s inspiration everywhere you look. When it comes to comedy often times your funniest work comes from personal experiences (work, school, family, etc).

You can always look at current events and see what you can spin out of that.

Aside from that, think outside the box. Look up random writing prompts and see if you can make them funny or relatable.

thats usually my method,

i think of a random scenario and over exxaggerate it

theres an art to it knowing the diffrence between whats funny and whats just funny to me


plus the satisfaction when you roll the dice and people overwhelmingly agree that the stupid shyt you came up with is hilarious and made their day

i did standup sketch improv for a couple years

talk to yourself all the time and especially in the shower

my comedy partner used to do cross country in HS so he was running all the time and getting to that runner's high type clarity would do wonders when we were stuck on sketches/skits.

when i taught i would just select random words and make them the last sentence of my story so i'd have to get to some ridiculous point to make things make sense.

if you want to get really deep with it we can in dms or whatever.

i stopped doing comedy a min ago and think about it, but do not regret leaving the game, every day.

what you'll begin to see with creators/comedians, the ones that crank out topical content like everyday or at least once a week they have a good formula where they don't need to really go in and conduct a premise-level joke, they just put their spin on it. Most of the times in this era topical content can just be restated because reality is the highest-tier joke but because it is so real people do need largely a second exposure to it. Sharing your observation about reality, the same reality that everyone else sees but with your POV is beautiful and since you are on the algorithm you've probably seen the "not one original experience" type comments because its both true and false but to explain that is going to be deep.

dunno if you are a philosophical cat but this is really good as unlike other "verbal arts", tragedy, drama, poetry, comedy hadn't had an aristotelian foundation-level-breakdown largely until Henri Bergson worked on it

highly recommened listening to that while doing some chores before taking and talking to yourself in the shower.
