Starting to think that the college thing might not be for me :patrice:

Whats it like being a firefighter? Can you move around or do you have to just stay in one area? You experience any cism in the work place? What the benefits looking like?

You better rethink that

Since you want to be a Firefighter, I assume Earth Science is of your interest. Get a degree in an earth science related field.
Geography, Geology, Earth Science general degree, Meteorology, Biology, Land Surveying, etc

What alot don't realize is a degree, ANY science and math degree can give you a leg up in hands on trades. Especially in Firefighting, a degree would have you at a higher starting salary, and able to do less physical labor on the job

That's my plan for a lazy rich life :mjcry:

They drug test. One of the last few jobs/professions with a pension as retirement(most cities). Some cities require a minimal amount of college credits. Factor in overtime, certification pay, guaranteed step raises, promotions, and yes you can easily make six figures. Your job is protected by civil service law in most major departments. A degree only matters as a ways of meeting the initial hiring requirements for many of the jobs. It does not hurt to have one for future. Every department is different. You can move around , but it is not practical because the hiring process for the average dept is a year. Also there are other factors like becoming vested in the retirement plan which means you need to stay employed at that particular department and pay into the retirement system for a number of years before you are able to retire. The cism exists it just depends on where you plan to work. I am sure you will find a better environment in the Atlanta and D.C. area. There is cism everywhere in every job. This is America. Do your research and talk to some firefighters. You are going to be surprised. Oh and for the record it is not a "white people job". 10% of the job at the most is putting out fires. The rest is EMS medical related work. You do most of your work as a paramedic or emergency medical technician(EMT).

that guys lying no way he makes six figures. Thats Fire Chief and Police Chief money :laff:

You make like 40 grand a year starting but you'll have hella free time.

You wont get in though bruh, every opening has like 700 applications with actual people who hold degrees for it :mjlol:

It is much easier than you think especially if it is a large city.....700 is not a lot of people. People drop like flies after the first two-three rounds of testing.

Off top, 1/3 of the people applying will have a criminal record or fail the drug test, another 1/3 will probably fail the written test.

i was a paramedic for 5 years, Ive been a firefighter for a year, love the job, great benefits, love the work schedule, 24 on, then 24 off, very good pay (have a house being built now), the test is no joke, the physical requirements arent either, and atleast in my city its hard to get on with them, thousands apply every time, but few get hired

if you have any more questions hit me up, Ive yet to face any racism, at my firestation im the only black guy, there is one white female, 2 hispanic guys and the rest are white, but one of the white guys is actually married to a black woman. My girl and I hang out with them atleast once a week
