I was offered an IT job but have never done this before although I am experienced in some IT aspects.

It's a new company so they are starting from scratch.

Basically I need to come up with both the software and hardware needed for:

3 offices, reception and conference room

4 desktops. 1 big printer tied to them all

Phone system comes with extension

Internet access.

I asked her if she wants to add a server she said no.

She also want me to make her a website with their emails with that site's domain name and a form that customers can fill out. That I'm sure I can do in Wordpress.

1) This thread makes me want to pull my hair out because they want an IT guy to not only do hardware and software...but also put together a website. That shyt infuriates me.

2)

Why not 5 computers?
1 low end for the reception area
3 mid tier for the offices
1 higher end for the conference room where mission critical shyt goes down (projector too?)

Get a GB switch to handle all of the internal traffic. Something with a firewall built in would be nice.

Put everything on a small work group

Buy a network printer and attach all of the computers to it via IP

As far as a phone system I can't really recommend anything that's not going to be a total waste of money for such a small office setup. Maybe something directly from the phone company or something open source (asterik) would be best in this situation.

3)

tell them to go to a web developer for the website. otherwise charge them extra for it. anyone else tired of intellectual property not being treated with the respect it deserves? I AM!

You can't setup a mail server without editing the MX records in the DNS. It's not a plugin for wordpress, but after you setup the MX records you can use Contact Form 7 (there might be a better one, i haven't done wordpress in a couple years.)

Usually AT&T and Comcast offer small business class lines for a reasonable price. More power to that man. Sounds like he's in for a headache.

Not entirely true. The Contact Form 7 plugin (and any other form plugin) will still work via PHP SendMail without the need of MX records. shyt, you can even spoof the "from" email address.

So if all they want to do is receive the Contact Form results to a Gmail account there's absolutely no reason to setup DNS or MX records.

If they want a professional looking email@ourdomain.com then MX records will be required for direct emails and replies....but not for the contact form plugin. That will work fine without it.
