Any of y'all have gay family members? How do you treat/view them?

I have a gay nephew. He was the first gay person in my family as far as I am aware. The men in my family are some ultra masculine cats (I come from a long line of blue collar hard working men, pimps, and hustlers), so this was definitely something different for my family. He came out his first year of high school.

At first I was really thrown off and hoped that he would grow out of it and worried how it would affect our relationship since I figured it would be hard for us to relate to each other. I was also worried about him getting bullied in school and growing to have low self esteem.

Years later he's one of the most popular kids in his school and pretty successful. Generally a happy smart young man. Our relationship hasn't really suffered because we still have a lot in common since he's a cool ass kid that's into music and herb, just like I was during his age.

I've made an extra effort to treat him like anybody else, always accept him, and have tried to teach him the importance of having good character, and the pitfalls to avoid as a BLACK YOUNG MAN. I'm real proud of my nephew.

Anyway, I'm curious as to y'alls experiences?

Apparently he told my dad he was struggling with gay feelings but my dad is like the family pastor so basically told him that its a spirit he needs to pray out. This nikka had a long time girl friend he never fukked and has serious depression issues. Its sad because he is an extremely talented man but being in the closet fukked him over.

Yeah that’s something that I worried about with my nephew which is why I always made to effort to accept him and not treat him any different.

I have two gay cousins and one bi.

My oldest cousin is a woman, but she's always been big, like 6'1 and more into basketball. I knew she was different before I even know what gay was, never cared but it would tickle me to see her get lil chin hairs lol, immature shyt. Didn't help she used to rock a jeri curl too. Now she's older, and she brought the baddest, thickest girl to one of our Christmas dinners. I won't say I was jealous but I was impressed.

I have a cousin that's my age who again, I knew was different since we were kids. He's never "come out" because everybody can just tell. He doesn't bring his partners to family functions but it's kind of an open secret that nobody really acknowledges.

Then I have a younger cousin, who told me he was bi one Christmas, and he thought he was going to shock me. I knew he was gay or bi before he said it, never really saw him with chicks as he came of age so I just figured that's what it was. The only person who had an issue with it is his father and if it wasn't the bi thing it would be something else. His pops is one of those types that was so ambitious and pressed to get the big house and live around white folks that he kind of forgot about his family in the process and doesn't understand why there's a disconnect, so his sexual orientation is just an external factor for him to harp on instead of addressing how his 'fire' for wealth and prestige didn't serve his family life very well.

Two gay cousins who are successful. One went to Clark and was making 100K+ a year and owning two homes in Downtown Atlanta by the time he was 30. He was recently diagnosed as bipolar with schizophrenia after he lead cops on high speed chase through the city because he thought demons were chasing him. He spent some time in a psych unit, stayed with some rich gay friends until he got on his feet and eventually bounced back. Didn't know he was gay until I was like 13.

My other one hasn't come out publicly that I know of but he has the mannerisms, has a ton of female friends who he never dates and posts suspect shyt on his Facebook. He's cool though and works for Disney in Florida. They gave him a suite to live in at one of their hotels as long as he worked for them. shyt looks like some millionaire penthouse shyt

I have gay cousins and friends. I treat them like everyone else. They’re still people who can be funny, loving, need someone to talk to (about life and things in general) and be cool as fukk. I like genuinely good people, regardless of their sexual orientation.
