I use magic shave, then shower in cold water, and rub aloe vera on my face afterwards and lotion up.

This saved my life, always got razor bumps with a blade, so I've been using these for years and it's helped me tremendously:

and I use the edger for those stubborn longer neck hairs that the closer shaver is not designed to cut (and to shape up my 'stache and goatee)

Above the fray.
Have said this a few times, but

You have to understand the root of the problem to address it (pun)

Our facial hair doesnt grow out straight, it naturally coils. Coiling back into the skin is what causes the inflammation

On top of whatever shaving method you use, the BEST thing you can do is to loosen the coils regularly.

Either with a manual toothbrush, an electric toothbrush, or a buf-puf...use something to gently rub against your facial hair. It frees the ones that are coiling into your skin.

In the old days, they marketed buf-pufs directly to Black men for that purpose.

Interesting, which do you think is more effective an electric or manual toothbrush?

so after years of experimenting l, heres whats working for me:

-first off exfoliate. use a beard scrub once, no more than twice a week. this removes the excess dirt, dead skin and oil that causes rough shaves

(3.0 oz Face Buff Energizing Scrub with Vitamin C & Mint - Jack Black | Ulta Beauty)

-secondly use a gentle, soothing shaving cream and let the cream sit for 2-3 minutes, i use aveeno therapeutic shaving cream.

-get a single blade razor that uses old school razor blades. some thing like this : Long Handle Double Edge Safety Razor w/ 10 Blades (Black)

-shave downward, in one to two inch motions and avoid going over the same spot 3 or more times. also youre probably holding the razor too tight, loosen your grip and be gentle.

-luse some tend skin to cut down on irritation, use a toner to clean excess oil and dirt.

-finally, apply a solid moisturizer and post shave balm, preferably using a product that does both.

using this method has resulted in the clearest and smoothest skin ive had in years.
