For the screenwriters in here, how much money did some of you guys dish out for an agent? Were the agents cooperative and really trying to push your stuff. Write now I'm writing a show with my brother and he's been doing a lot of promotional art work. So I'm thinking of not only getting an agent but marketing by ourselves via his artwork, using twitter, facebook and stuff.

2 more questions. How long have you guys been working on your screenplays? Did you guys take any classes, or workshops, or were you guys in film school or something?

I'm working on a novel as we speak.

1) Write the book first before you start looking for a publisher if you're a new author.
2) Get an agent. They should work for a percentage of your deal. You should never have to pay them upfront.
3) You could go the independent route and purchase an ISBN#. It's cheap overhead to sell e-books. Producing large quantities of hardcopy books is expensive, but should at least press 100.
4) If your book picks up steam, you will be contacted by a major publisher, and since you own your work, you can re issue the book thru the major publisher and they can also buy out the rights to the original issuance you have on the market.
