americans being clueless about politics isnt really because of people passionate and knowledgeable about sports
sports is a hobby, just like listening to hip hop or playing video games or programming or engineering a robot or something. people know their shyt in hobbies or their line of work
besides, politics is quite a dirty business, and on global level it usually doesnt affect you as much as local politics. to me, there are far more examples of ignorance and unawareness than politics, if you want to pick on that. thousands of intelligent, educated people who do some very important jobs have no clue about politics. it's OK.

I like sports and I tune in to watch big games and my favorite athletes, but in the grand scheme of things, this shyt is so unimportant. You got muthafukkas (prob some on this forum) talking about their favorite player signing some big contract, selling overpriced shoes, fukking some harlot with tit/ass injections, and winning or losing yet another ring--like this shyt is really some big deal. Meanwhile, these folks are living check to check, spending a decent chunk of those checks to buy those expensive-ass shoes, chasing these silly broads tryna be like their favorite athletes, and thinking winning is all about how much money you make and what you spend it on. All the while, corporations get richer, while our asses get poorer; govt passes laws in favor of corps, while our asses are left begging for a livable wage and affordable healthcare; govt goes to war for benefit of corporations, while our asses have to go die in these wars; another drone strike kills scores of innocent people, while our asses have no idea because our media doesn't report it and...blah, blah, who the fukk cares, what's the score, oh we winning, yes, life is good.
