Trying to take my shyt to the next levo :patrice:

I wanna get into big data.... I know SQL and some real basic statistics, but I'm thinking this masters would put me over the threshold. Online stat degree from a decent state school here is gonna be like $13-15K all in :patrice:

Just looking for any experience with online degrees and getting work with a statistics degree. I love #s so the shyt will be a good time for me I think. Might as well monetize the shyt

:yeshrug:Why get a statistics degree, just major in IT with a concentration in data analytics or something.

People sleep online degree, but alot if directors, vps, managers pad their resume with them.

Just to have an MBA or MIS, behind their name. Go for it but not statistics that's to specific

Depending on what level you want to go on at, online courses don't have recruitment juice. People get quite snobby about these things.

Top Recruiters will be :scust:

Also I wouldn't do just stats, do something more versatile like computer science, programming with stats IMO.

If you're not looking to work for some top company,an online program is fine. UMUC is accredited and has a great online program. Their networking is great too. Make sure whatever program you use the school is accredited and a few decades old.

Yeah in Math but I haven't had to use it a lot, here and there in Finance modelling but not Masters level math and to be perfectly honest I've forgotten most of what I learned and still use a calculator or excel for basic shyt

It all depends on what you want to use it for but imo unless you're going into something like Physics research or into teaching it's a waste of time

I worked for many companies
Only my current one has a statistician.

Ur statement is true. .. If this was 1990.
I can't see how the ability to analyze data was more relevant in 1990 than 2017?

Every company has much more data to parse through nowadays thanks to CRM tools, industry papers, etc. Being well-versed in statistics seems like a serious asset in many (any?) technological fields.

:dahell:

I got passed up for an analyst role for someone with a stats background just a few weeks ago

Im buddy buddy with a lot of finance/analytics dudes and they all have or value some kind of formal maths/statistics training. If anything a generic MBA/"IT" degree is meaningless, everyone and their uncle Junebug has an MBA.

I would say where you are getting your online degree matters a lot.
Are you going to one of those online only schools are a traditional college that offers online education?
I'm taking online classes but my degree won't show that I took any classes online.

Same... My Bachelors is from a traditional School... I took 1 class in seat though... the rest was all Online and my Masters will be Online from a traditional school as well.

shyt will read a degree from the traditional school... the words Online never have to appear on the resume

Whats your bachelors subject? What is it your looking to do and what kind of roles you been applying for? I do some big data work and I end up using stats all the time - even with the software that's out there, my team and I are still sometimes scribbling out formulas on pen and paper when we're researching.

Depending on what you're applying for (and your original bachelors) a full on masters may not always be necessary. Coursera for example offer online courses in stats, data science, analysis, programming etc. that teach theory and coding skills as well as final projects that give you demonstrable code to show what you can do. More importantly they're from respected schools (Stanford, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Washington), good for the CV.
