Don't you have to leave your phone on all night for this to work? My smartphone is damn near entry level, so I fear that if I leave on all night regularly, it will shorten the phone's lifespan.

I saw your edit, yes I have an dedicated plug in. I charge it overnight but I usually turn my phone off before I go to sleep. And yes I know you can leave it on all night and still charge it. I just prefer to turn my phone off at night.
