I am. You write press releases and feature stories. Keep your clients and their promotions in the media. Keep a friendly relationship with the media. Oversee the social media profiles. Coordinate events and press conferences. And you gotta be ready to deal with crisis.

Look at the world today, with everything being so politically correct and businesses and public figures needing to stay in positive light, public relations will be a work field on the rise.
AKA DAMAGE CONTROL

you guys are evil :wow:

Wanna let a fellow Torontonian know what your job entails, everyday schedule, etc?

What's the pay like as the ranks go up? More females than men?

Thanks booboo
My days are random.

I work for a small firm and most of our clients are real estate developers...that's pretty much our niche. I did the fashion/beauty PR when I first started and I prefer this...it's more corporate and there's more money in it.

I'm a consultant...I work directly under the firm's partners and manage a variety of client accounts. I have to write PR proposals explaining our goals and objectives to bring a product (development) to market and depending on our audience, how we're going to target them and how (via which news media outlets). I attend a number of weekly marketing meetings and work with marketing, sales and advertising to help heighten and sustain awareness. Writing News Releases, pitches, articles, etc. and placing them with the appropriate publications is one aspect. Event planning is another component. Crisis communications. The key is to just understand the product and your audience and identify how you're going to support marketing initiatives via PR.

Every day schedule: it's not a 9-5. Events are often during the evening, sometimes on weekends. Long hours.

Pay depends on your experience and how well you negotiate for yourself. I've been at it for 7 years now so I get paid pretty well...I campaign for myself and my bosses understand my value...if that's the case, then they'll want to keep you happy and will pay well.

It's a female-dominated profession.

This my 1st year so I'm at 30,000 right now but I'm getting a raise at the end of the year and my salary will go up to 40k next year, 50k the following. However with working in communications comes connections. We work with a lot of people in City Hall so the police department called me the other day wanting to interview me for a job within their communications department. That salary starts at 65k a year. :blessed: I'm interviewing with them this week. It's all about how good you are at your job, if you do good and make the right relationships (which is easy to do), your connections can easily get you through over time.

I would search PR companies in your area and send your cover letter and resume en masse to them. See if any of them bite. Just get your foot in the door and work from there.
Do you have a degree? If so what and does it help you currently?

Bachelors in Mass Communication and its huge to have for firms/businesses to be interested and you and for you to excel in certain parts of this field of work.

do you find the field to be open to other liberal arts majors?

Did you go for a post-grad certificate from Seneca or Humber? What led you to the job?

Post grad from Centennial...then internship

Cool. I have interest in music/film/tv/fashion. I would assume the beauty/fashion that you did work in was more fun, rather than the area you're in now.
