Been doing things like this for 10 years. Start with something cheap and small (like your phone, or a used film camera for $5) and start taking photos. Cinematography is harder, but a gopro is a cheap entry point that you will actually bring places. I would say, spend minimal money and go shoot.

I appreciate your advice and time. I'm interested in action shots. I want to photograph and film myself cycling, playing soccer, cooking, and having conversations.

I like the idea of strapping a go pro to my chest and recording my ride and photographing subjects when I stop or am moving slowly. Food, flowers, people, building, etc.

A) Would two cameras be best for this?

B) Should I think less and just buy some pre owned cameras and get started?

C) Am I jumping the gun by looking into a Panasonic gh3?

I'm poor, so I can invest 300 hundred a month tops on this. I'm also new to both crafts.

imo ur jumping the gun go buy a used full frame camera off craigslist if you are really thinking of getting a big camera (google full frame). Id still recommend a gopro seems to be where you head is - again, buy it used, 100s are out there no one uses and people are trying to sell. Sounds like you are more interested in video than photography, i dunno.

All i gotta say is ease into it - i see too many people who drop $$ on something then use it once a month if that. Just buy cheap, buy used for now, dont go over board - do it cause you like doing it not cause you wanna add it to ur linkedin.

and you can get a sick old canon 50d or 60d with lens for less than $300 (these are 6-8 yrs old but still solid).

Thank you man! I will be applying your advice. I am more into video but I also want to get into photography. I'd like to get one camera that does both, or a couple, one for each.

I'm going to take your advice and get a go pro and a used full frame camera.

One thing to keep in mind is a fullframe is big and heavy so it can be annoying to bring places (like a bike ride) - I may suggest a ricoh GR they are really good. The difference between a $100 camera and a $5000 camera is the ability to take pictures in the dark/indoors. If you dont do night shooting, you can take great photos for cheap!

For video I would recommend getting a cheap HD camcorder, DSLR's are not fun to shoot video with imo. If you want a nice still photo kit that isn't too cumbersome, I would personally go with a used 5d Classic and 40mm pancake lens. The image quality with this combo is amazing. Since it has less megapixels the color gradients contained in the larger pixels are much nicer than what modern day cameras produce. There's almost something magical about it. I wish I hadn't sold mine. This is the smallest full size DSLR package you can get, but I still think it's too bulky to ride with in my experience.

I'll look on ebay and craigslist for second hand ones. If I'm patient I'm sure I'll find something. I want to pick one up next week.

Thank you. I'll be on a bike with my cameras. They'll be in a backpack. I want to make movies of myself on my daily rides.

I know I'll need a gopro to capture my cycling videos. I like the idea of having a dedicated camera for photography and video. HD cam corders seem ideal for what I want to do because they have swivel screens. I want to interview people too.

Thank you so much for your advice.

I'd sell you my gopro. Let me know if you're interested.
