Mid 17th century: abbreviation of God damn (me).

"God Damn!" originally called upon The Holy and Righteous Power of God to condemn (notice the spelling there!) a soul to everlasting Hell and Damnation.

It was a clerical tool used by the church to control the actions of the people: threatening them with Hell-fire for all-eternity, unless they performed to the church's bidding.

It was adopted as the most powerful curse by the people. Due to the loss of fear and influence by the church in our lives, and the fact that it is now so commonplace, I would scale it down considerably.
