I've done meetups, first one was this life class where we talked about our dreams and aspirations, did yoga and actually made business contacts. I would use the site again, it's cool.

THere are tons of tech meetups in NYC. When I was learning emberjs and participating in small hackathons, Meetup.com was where I found out about them. THey're always during the week though.
