The Atlanta jobs thread gave me this idea. I'm often asked what it is I do for a living and it's always hard to explain. In short, I work with landfill gas systems. Gas is produced as trash decomposes; the gas - primarily methane must be properly managed. Using a bunch of pipes in the ground and blowers to provide vacuum, we either use the gas for energy production or burn it off. I deal with those systems.

If that's all you did, pay range is about 45k - 65k

I've been in the industry 15 years and have expanded my skills and knowledge regarding compliance, design and reporting so I'm well beyond that. As with most things, the ceiling is high if you try.

I work for an engineering & consulting firm and we deal with all aspects of landfills except actually handling trash. We design them, oversee construction, perform compliance monitoring, develope remediation plans, provide operation assessments, and other services. Other obscure jobs just within our company are groundwater samplers who collect samples from around landfill to monitor for any environmental impact from the landfill, and construction quality assurance people who watch and document the construction of landfills and gas systems to ensure work is done according to the specifications. It is a travel-heavy industry

Anybody else got the insight on a possible career or job?
