It's funny you say this because the medieval aesthetic was considered played out for years and studios avoided it. It wasn't until GoT where it got back in. So this is kind of an "outdated" take. Nowadays studios realize as long as you put an original spin on medieval, it'll work.

The era that's died and hasn't come back yet, and maybe won't ever come back is WWII. There was a point where a crazy amount of media was based in WWII and now that shyt pretty much dead.

It is getting a bit stale BUT I am looking forward to Kingmakers.
I enjoy the type of scenario where they kind of twist the genre into something crazy.

It's a heavily overused setting in games even JRPGs. They're often imitating that era just with some anime flair. I didn't like it in FFXVI, made the game bland and drab. Grey and brown overtones all over. Post apocalyptic is another sort of over used setting that is starting to get boring too. Don't get me wrong if done right the game isn't worse off I just don't get too excited when I see another medieval setting used in a game.

It would be interesting to get more games based on early antiquity....really anything from about 5,000 B.C. to maybe 300 AD or so.

Feel like most games either have a Middle Ages motif, WW2, modern or futuristic.

Maybe something from the 1900 to 1930-ish era, like a GTA set during prohibition in NYC/Chicago. Have a white (Irish or Jew) protagonist plus a Black protagonist and have them deal with different shyt from rivals, cops etc, based on the character you're using at the time.

there was that far cry game, primal i think?

the issue is that for those games they'd pretty much have to lie about history - making all the prehistoric characters white or white adjacent.

there;s this new game inexile is doing thats like a victorian steampunk setting called clockwork revolution dealing with time travel that seems pretty dope. reminds me of bioshock infinte in a way. i love infinites setting, very unique. well all the immersive sims are.

there's also metaphor refantazia which is the persona jrpg spin on a similar aesthetic.
