I got an uncle (no relation; just every older african male is my uncle in west african culture), that calls me every week to check on how i'm doing at school, to check if i need some cash and helps me decide what i should do in terms of career paths and graduate schools. and ACTUALLY puts my aspirations into consideration and my decisions in high regard (ex. he supports the fact that I would like to go to an international school, do some field research, do something in foreign affairs, etc.). Contrasting to my parents, that want me to do nothing but obey what they want me to do, come home, go to a crappy university in Toronto and do something in teaching or nursing, and wait until someone offers me marriage or something, and it really causes a lot of strife and lack of communication, since we usually don't see eye to eye in what they want from me, or how they want me to act.

Anyone else in this situation, or has ever been in this situation?

Nah but it's not uncommon to have someone else support you more than your parents, do you as long as he has your back you're good. Also salute to your career choice :salute:
