I used to like sifting through the horror section and shyt like that and my video stores always had these creepy ass posters and shyt in them sections having me like

Yeah I would regularly rent like 1-2 new releases but also 1-2 old movies so really Netflix/Redbox ain't the same

Going to the video store on a Friday night after school and then getting pizza and snacks and chillin with my friends and lil shorty

Fam you just hit home..shyt..memories.

Spent my allowance damn near every week.
Then moms told me I was too old to have allowance and should wanna help out on my own
Brought snacks from home and sold them in the lunchroom
Right back in blockbuster every weekend

Got questioned about the groceries disappearing
Told moms I was still hungry cuz the school lunch was small.
Got extra money to buy snacks
Took that money right back to blockbuster....and still sold those snacks from home.
Got exposed by my sister and beat for lying
Stole her money for revenge and was right back in that blockbuster.

Lost 92 bricks had to fall back
Knocked a nikka off his feet, but I crawled back
Had A-1 credit, got more snacks
From the first to the fifth period, gave it all back
If, I'm not a hustler what you call that?

I thought I replied to this thread when it was originally posted, but I guess there was another one (there were a lot when the announcement came that they were all closing). You brehs have no idea...Fridays were the best. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, mom & pop stores, etc. (sometimes for movies and like @3Rivers said, sometimes for WWF/WCW PPVs) and we were on our way to Pizza Hut, Burger King or McDonalds and then home. I'd rent the occasional games too. Sometimes I'd just wing it like a lot of you did (ended up renting BioDome for some damn reason once ).

Two related stories: The guy who created Redbox came to Blockbuster with the idea in the early 2000s' and they hit him with the Also, when I was looking for my first job in 2004, I went and applied at a few places - one being Blockbuster (and another being Circuit City). Didn't recieve a call from either one and now they're both gone so maybe it's good that I didn't.

Still...I miss those days. It was a great time to be alive if you were a kid. You young cats don't know what were you were missing out on.

Oh yeah - another story. I rented my first horror movie by accident when I was six at a mom and pops store down the street from me. I rented Child's Play 2 thinking it was a kids movie. Looking back on it, I could have checked the rating and the clerks could have stopped me but they either didn't give a fukk or they thought it was funny as hell. It was a real surprise when I got home. Chucky ended up becoming one of my favorite slashers though so

Blockbuster fukked up when they started charges people fraudulently with those late fees. Greedy b*stards tried to start raping your pockets and then the popcorn and candy was damn near the same price as the shyt at the movies. Thats when the word got out and Netflix crept up and killed them. I do miss them though.

Never rented a video in my life but my homeboy from high school who just so happened to pass away in September worked at Hollywood Video and his moms was the manager so he would take a copy of everything that came in for himself and would pass them shyts on to me afterwards. When he passed I went up in the attic lookin for pictures and football mementos to give to his moms and found a big ass box with like 100 of them Hollywood Video tapes.

I wanna go back and watch some cuz I recorded old NBA & NFL games over the shytty movies but I ain't got no damn VCR.

It's just not the same.

I miss walking into a video store and picking something based on the name and cover. That feeling when you found a hidden Gem.


Same with music. Used to just go in and blind buy music and see if I like it.

This post is so on point and not to go off on a rant but I'll just say I'll always be grateful for growing up in an era where you could witness great movies and music on a whim and out of sheer curiosity. Use to feel like you found a treasure with an unknown group (rapper or singer) and movie.

They used to have a section where lil kids could do a interview...this was in the early 90's...me and my lil brother was there.....dude said "what do you like to do for fun".....I was like..."play mortal kombat and go to the pool"

Anytime I listen to someone say they were going to check this movie out but decided not to because the reviews weren't great, I die a little inside I think of all the flicks I discovered as a kid just because the poster looked cool or the box looked cool and then I look at the reviews in retrospect and find out critics hated them. So if that was the case today, would I even have seen those movies? Ace Ventura was rejected by critics, would people see it today or lame out because of a score?

If you think about it back in the day there was only 2 movie critics that people even considered or took seriously. Siskel and Ebert and I don't know where you're from but when I was growing up the show use to come on late at night and they were looked at as snobs for the most part b/c they had ridiculous ratings for movies. I think back then no one knew how to really market these movies which is why so many of them came out and you didn't know what you were getting. Some were bad but a lot of them were amazing. The same thing with music. The internet really did fukk everything up IMO. It started giving people who didn't need a voice one and people started taking those opinions as fact instead of actually going out and watching something for themselves.
