i read a lot of really dense legal documents for my job for like hours a day, so i honestly don't get a lot of joy out of reading books for pleasure anymore.

i used have more patience for it before i started doing my current job.

now i'd much rather throw on a podcast or audio book than stare at a page or kindle lol.

Wow.
Here's a suggestion - choose interesting material to read!
Reading isn't a chore, brehs. It's a basic mechanism for enlightenment, enjoyment and information.
If you want to capture or re-capture the love of reading a good book, start by reading a short story by Walter Mosley.
Then, sneak up in a novel. I guarantee that you will love the story telling, references to black culture, the pace (which you control!), and if you aren't careful, you're bound to increase your working vocabulary.
Think of reading like having a good meal - some of us scarf down a Church's three piece in the car while others savor that filet mignon 5 course dining experience at the new spot in town.
Give yourself a chance...
My book is non fiction. I clearly don’t hate reading in general since I post here. My issue is focusing and retaining.

if a book captures me I can read it in 2-3 sittings.:manny:

I'm talking 600+ pages, funny thing is I have a similar problem with shows/movies. If you don't hook me in some aspect relatively soon then your gonna lose me, but if you get me I'm gonna consume it at a record pace

edit: some people find a happy medium where because of audio books they can "read" books they normally wouldn't have during their morning commute or while doing something mundane like cleaning/cooking. when I'm interested I tend to far outpace the reading speed of an audiobook so the idea is good in theory, but all it ends up doing is frustrating me.

It's probably difficult because you're not as imaginative as you once were in your childhood. Personally, I never stopped daydreaming so reading a book (fantasies are especially fun to read) is equivalent (if not better) to watching a movie for me. I can literally see the images flash across my mind as if they're happening in real-time. There really isn't anything quite like a solid page-turner. Only downside is that you create the voice and face of every character so if it ever gets adapted and you haven't finished, it can fukk with your perspective. That's why you should always read the book before watching the movie. I regret watching all the Harry Potter movies before finishing the books to this day. :wow:

have you ever read the "well of ascension" mistborn series by brandon sanderson?

I have a very solid picture in my mind of how the characters look and how their powers function from that series. All that does is raise the bar of satisfaction for me if that series were to ever be animated or done in live action whereas a newcomer might be thrilled with it. I think that's why a lot of people who read book series first might be sour on a solid well done adaption to tv/movie form.

I used to love reading books but now I think audiobooks have ruined reading for me. I’ll have to reread a page like 2-3 times because i started thinking about bullshyt while reading and didn’t retain shyt.

Is this form of ADHD or some shyt? I struggled in community college with this too.

I bought a book from Amazon a week ago and haven’t got far in it. I’m already looking at the audiobook version but don’t want to waste the bread :stopitslime:

Ngl, got caught in that same space.

Then read a book again. Nothing like making time to strictly focus on prose, and i love audiobooks.

Taking that time is more worthwhile to me.
