So why do black people born in London say they’re British but not English? :patrice:
First piece of info in this thread that may be news to me.

Black folks born in England do not claim to be English but instead say British? :ohhh:

Are they looked at funny for claiming to be English?

most black folk even asians dont see themselves as English , its always British ......

most people see English people as having a specific white anglo saxon background, to be honest only time I can recall non white people refer to themselves as English is when they are playing for the national football team

English is a specific culture, while being British isnt so much..... I know to most people that wont make sense

Are Scotland and Wales really their own countries or are they more countries in name/history only?

I've always got the impression that the UK was the "country" as a "country" is defined by most of the world.

Technically, UK is the "country", but historically, its always been England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Scotland is, essentially, a different country. They have their own education and healthcare system, parliament, language, banknotes. They did, however, have a referendum in 2014, and voted to remain within the union.

Wales is a principality with slightly less autonomy than Scotland.

Hmm... So the whites there get to refer themselves as the Nationals of their individual countries ie English, Welsh, Scottish, etc meanwhile all other ethnicities get lumped together as British.

Do whites ever refer to themselves as British?

has a lot to do with most (not all) children of immigrants still identifying with their parents, grand parents, great grandparents culture .... being English is very specific ..... being British isnt
