i mean, the shyt sounds good, but it doesn't make me really wanna dance and it's kind of boring to me for the most part (queue the afrobeats lovers posting videos ITT to try and convert me....which i invite and will let u know if it works, but i've listened to plenty).

Really not trying to shyt on it, but i think a lot of it has to do with a lot of the rhythms sounding similar with slight variation. It's a big reason why i dislike reggaeton, but there seems to be more variation in afrobeats compared to reggaeton at least.

I admit that I also listen to other kinds of music that is much more stimulating to me while lots of afrobeats sounds looped and the vocals seem to sound the same too with the autotune (i don't even hate autotune, not all the time at least).

a lot of the afrobeats i've heard sound too "chill" and it's like lounge music to chill back to me even though i see people in the videos dancing to it.

any of yall feel the same way? :jbhmm: or am i about to get shyt on somethin serious :lupe:

I’m half-Ghanaian and I can’t stand it beyond maybe one or two songs on a good day.

It’s too repetitive and generic, like an African Reggaeton. The autotune vocals are too processed and thin, the melodies and lyrics too corny and the visuals always come off as garish and gimmicky. The only upside is the amount of bad bytches that like it.

I think black people in America objectively make better music than brehs everywhere else

yo, you just summed up my post in a much more concise and compact format :salute:
you agree with my reggaeton/afrobeats comparison, i agree with the autotune vocals being very thin post-processing, and the repetitive nature of the genre as a whole. big ups to the women that like it though, yes, but i honestly can't listen to more than a couple songs :dwillhuh:

Yeah I was expecting it to sound like Fela Kuti, i.e. funkier.

why is everything mid to slow tempo now? I vape weed every day but I can't listen to slow, "wavy/vibey" lethargic ass music all day. I even fukk with ambient/drone music but sometimes I wanna tap my feet and groove to something. At least Amapiano has more of a deep house influence.

Where's the groove? Where's the FUNK? Where's the musicality? wheres the music for black people to dance too fr fr? where are the fukking BASS LINES? It's like the only dance music we can make now is house music, and i fukk with house. But if you listened to modern black music, you would think funk music never existed. And it's arguably the blackest genre of music we ever invented.

Black Americans need to bring back boogie music like the stuff from 1978-1982. It's mostly electronic so it doesn't sound too old-timey. It's groovy and you can dance to it, you can water it down a bit and make it more poppy, the subject matter is fun and harmless.

The success of Steve Lacy's Bad Habit show the audience is hungry for actual MUSIC, and bad habit wasn't even groovy like that.

breh, i'm so glad you stated the bolded, because i listen to chillhop instrumentals AND EVEN LO-FI HIP HOP all day that is laid back, and i can still even dance to that! however, most afrobeats makes me wanna straight sleep. i honestly don't get it. You're also right about the bass, because i do feel like there's something lacking in most afrobeats and i think the lack of bass attributes to the "thin" quality i get from it.

Amapiano is the answer to all the above:
