Planning my honeymoon (yeah yeah I know GMB) and we are deciding between a trip to Hong Kong vs a trip to Tokyo. Anyone here been to both? Which one y'all recommend?

TL DR - Tokyo.

Been to both.

Depends on what you want to do, and where you're going to stay.

Food - I like the Cantonese more than Japanese - but you can get a whole lot more variety and options in Japan, including Cantonese.

Museums/Sites to see - About even, edge to Tokyo because it's just a bigger city. You can "see" all of HK in like 5 days. You won't scratch the surface of Tokyo in a month.

Shopping
- Tokyo, hands down
Pricing - tough, it depends on what you want to do. Tokyo is cheaper than it's ever been. HK is "cheap", but not Cambodia/Vietnam cheap.

Driving - don't even think about it
Taxis - HK wins
Metro/Subway - Draw. Both are world class, but both shut down (unlike NYC).

Politeness/Hospitality - Tokyo, not that HK is on some BS, but you're gonna run into "mainland" behavior in HK. Rude, push past, cut lines, don't wait, etc. It's not India levels, but that J's are way nicer.

I honestly don't see any benefit to going to HK over Tokyo, especially in the current climate.

Overall
I think Japan is better if you're willing to hop the Shinkansen and move around the country a bit.

Hong Kong
Stayed at the Mira Hotel. I enjoyed Hong Kong and plan on returning but outside of a few scenic tours I didn't find it too compelling. All of the interesting places, like Kowloon (The Walled City) are now tourist attractions. It's all very Western these days, high-end shopping, fast food, etc.

Tokyo
This is tough. It's difficult to really get into the culture of a place unless you're there for months or years, so, I mean, you can see like the anime district, or the party districts and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I actually had the most fun in places like Kashiwa-noha, and just driving around Tokyo and exploring random non-tourist areas. I loved that shyt. Also had way more fun in places like Kyoto and lesser known cities that I could just explore and find peace in.

My favorite spot is Zurich, I enjoy discretion, orderliness, and a sort quiet and refined character. I actually see myself living there or finishing grad school at ETH Zurich, that's how much I love it.

To that point, I actually enjoyed staying just outside of Tokyo, in places like Kashiwa and Kashiwa-noha, where there is a UTokyo satellite campus, have kind of a youthful, yet quiet, feel to them.

Yeah I’d recommend visiting Kyoto for sure. So different. How much time you got OP?

As far as transportation, can you expound on the metro/subway shutdown part?

Both HK and Japan
Last train is around 12 Am/Midnight
First train is around 6am

As a young and single man, I been caught out there in both places. In Japan I had no bankroll. In HK wasn't a big deal cause I'm a grown up now.

In Japan Taxis were prohibitively expensive because of how far you usually need to go.
Japan has Uber though (which from what I read is even more expensive than a taxi)

HK Taxis are much more affordable - but possibly cash only.

Also, a lot of the businesses in Asia are cash only.

Yeah I’d say taxis in Japan are on par with pricing of AMERICAN Ubers

Going to Tokyo in September. Saw you can get an international driver license and ride around the city in Mario Karts :gladbron:

They are easy to get, just drop in a AAA and get your picture taken...basically.

fukk a Mario Kart, you can rent legit super cars and drive around the Wangan, Bay Shore, all the way to Tokyo Bay.

Breathtaking experience.

Driving - don't even think about it

Avoid day time traffic, but I highly recommend driving Tokyo at night.

I'm a train and public transportation whore but even more of a cityscape whore. Nothing like driving Tokyo expressways at night.

Tokyo, especially as it’s for your honeymoon. It’s expensive, as people have said, or at least it was when I was last there, but there is so much more to do, and see, even without spending too much. Food is great, and there’s some fukking funny / weird shyt to see all over the city.

Hotel rooms are fukking small, though, in Tokyo. HK not great, but you can definitely get a bit more space for what you spend.

What time of year are you planning on being there? HK also gets disgustingly humid for a fair chunk of time. It’s borderline unlivable.

i used to love HK for a few days partying (‘working‘) but it has changed so much over the last few years. It feels very different there as a foreigner now. I was there for a few days when the protests were happening - fukking crazy shyt was kicking off. The Chinese want Shanghai as the main business & financial hub for Sino & foreign companies and expatriates. They would not have a Western-created, developed, and everything else, city as Asia’s ‘capital’.

Both cool to visit, but if you gonna be with the soon-to-be Mrs Dj-method-x then Tokyo & Japan the only choice.
