Anyone ever claim a dependent that wasn't a relative?

My ex wants me to claim her son. I filled out my return on taxact but it wont add the child tax, even though her son lived with me for 9 months, because he's a nonrelative. She wants me to go back and put down that he's my son. Im just scared that irs will come after me for lying. Anyone ever do this before?

I might just tell her forget it. He lived with me for 7 months. But like I said hes a nonrelative. I can prove he lived with me but I cant prove that he's my son bc he isnt

You probably won't get audited. But if you do and they prove you lied you could loose your ability to file EIC in the future.

It's kinda hard for them to prove he's not your relative, so you'll probably be ok either way. The most important thing is to make sure nobody else files him, that's how you'll run into trouble.

why isn't she using him to file? these are the only questions u need to be concerned about answering.

I aint file my son this year, my girl did.... she giving me the extra cash. He bumped her up 2k, I would have gotten an extra 1.

i used buncha hoes kids for like 3 years..then they changed the rules and i got audited back in 06

had to pay them back..and i had already spent the money so it was a bytch

then its automatic audit for the next 7 years..if u use a dependent

They give u time to show proof the child lived with u during that period.
Medical records with your address on it,school records etc

OP can go ahead and claim the lil nikka..but he better stash the money til the coast is clear..

If he stayed with you at all then you good dog I promise you. It dont have to be a relative as long as you take care of someone you can claim them. Even if they audit as long as you got proof you took care of him you good they not gone tell you to bring the birth certificate with your name on it.

He said he can prove the kid stayed with him though. Thats the only reason Id tell him to do it. If not I wouldnt advise it.
