the most popular christmas song opens with chestnuts roasting on an open fire...never did that shyt in my life. i don't think i've ever even seen chestnuts in a store, only time i saw them IRL was a New York street cart.

In 1904, a devastating fungus was discovered on chestnut trees in New York's Bronx Zoo. Within a few decades, the chestnut blight had killed over 4 billion chestnut trees on more than 200 million acres in eastern North America

I was waiting for someone to post this. My dad really wanted to plant some blight-resistant chestnut trees. It's pretty crazy how they used to be everywhere and then one single disease wiped them out. Replant them, and they just die again.

I was binging on chestnut tree videos. They still exist but every time the natural ones get so big the blight infects them and kills off the top. Only the root systems are alive. At one time they were 1/4 of the trees in the Appalachian mountains and they’re so big they look like redwoods.



They’ve got 2 programs to bring them back; one is cross breeding them with Japanese chestnuts that are resistant and the other is GMO. This guy says the GMO trees survive better.
