I'm thinking of getting an MBA but I've heard it is basically a useless degree now. I want to get into Business administration and/or finance but I don't want to take out a loan and go into debt then be unemployed afterwards.

Those of you who got your MBA would you recommend it? How tough was it to find a job after? Do you enjoy the job you have? If you could go back what would you do different?

Any and all advice is appreciated brehs

I would only recommend it if you are already into your career and you're certain it will help in your career field. I'm a business analyst, most technical guys won't need it. But I'm working on mine because I'm on a leadership track and because I plan on teaching college when I retire. Most reputable colleges require you have a master's to teach adjunct.

It's not difficult as long as you're disciplined. But it may take a while if you work heavy hours on your job.

I am currently unemployed :mjcry:

I am looking to enter a similar field as yours. I have no problem doing well in school and studying but I want to find a job that makes me happy that requires leadership. :francis:

Do you have a history of leadership in previous job experiences? Depending on your previous experience and your current interests you might want to try a MA or MS in Organizational Leadership or Strategic Leadership instead of a MBA. That also depends on your undergrad degree major.

I just got my MA in Strategic Leadership last month because my prior work experience was management. Then I ended up in accounting and really wanted to dig deep into accounting so I was recently accepted into a 1 year MBA-Accounting program at the same university. Not really worried about the loans. Refund checks helped me out a bit.

Try to get an internship if you really think an MBA is for you. They more likely to make you full time once you finish your degree or get closer to finishing.

I would agree that it helps if you are trying to get into a leadership position in a company. I got my job to pay for mine and I had to commit to stay for 3 years or pay them back

No real job experience makes securing an internship relative to the MBA program more important to getting the job you want.

I got mine in 2008 luckily landed the job i had my mind on for the whole year 2 weeks after graduation.. you have to look at it as an investment because it does increase earning potential and opens doors positions you could not get without it. Over the life of your carrer if you plan on working in corporate america you will have a better chance of having a much higher amount of money over the next 30 years along with positions and marketability.

Getting mine now but my job is paying for it, I am pretty much getting it because it will beef up my resume for whatever I want to do in the future but I am looking to get back into starting my own business again so the additional knowledge helps , my undergrad is in Engineering. IMO, I don't really think it is worth it if you have to pay out of pocket, maybe if you can get into a top 10-15 school there may be some value, but try to find a job first, get some work experience, and then see if you can get your job to pay for it. The MBA market is very saturated.

Engineering was something I wanted to do as well but I didnt want to go back and start over (but I am willing)

Can you let me know more about your experience with engineering? Was it tough to find a job? What's your work life like day to day? Do you have to deal with a boss?
