yes unfortunately for those who are several generations deep in some of these neighborhoods, they will have been personally acquianted. At the last company i worked with, two of the women I worked with had brothers murdered.
my theory is that we as a society spend too much time looking for one answer rather to complex questions. it's the same as people who try to boil down Hillary's loss to white working class voters. right now it's just a perfect storm. police disengaging, gang lines changing block by block, city/county/state government that does not give one fukk, easy access to guns and young druggie 15/16/17 year olds willing to kill over Twitter beefs, schools shutting down forcing kids to go to school in enemy gang territory, huge heroin drug market, etc.
to actually address the root causes will require huge investments in the hood, precisely why these problems will never go away.
