Pick your niche wisely, optimize your site & Learn to write articles (or outsource it). Run a clean campaign (links, social, etc) and you will/should be eating soon
Prepare to spend
Search engines are getting smarter. You're better off creating a quality site that attracts humans rather than trying to do every trick in the book to please search engines.
Moved to the chop shop...hopefully you'll get some better replies in here
to start, you will want to learn what google's search algorithms want. learn how to research keywords, optimize the copy/meta data on your site, know what makes your site easy to crawl and easy to use by humans
once you learn that, you will be able to learn everything else at your own pace as you go along. of course, an entry level job will speed up your learning, if you can get it..
Use this : Nibbler - test your website
It's a good tool (and nothing more than that) to know if you're site is optimized (keywords, code clarity and quality, html5 ready, social network, accessibility...). The tool scans your site then gives your marks on several items and you can improve by modifying your site and rescanning it. I had a few other tools like that to help me, I'll try to find them.
