Boston doesn't have anything guaranteed though, there is no magic formula and Boston doesn't have any true game changing prospects either, outside of maybe Smart.
IT is 28, Al Horford is your second leading scorer and over 30. Anyone would gladly take Derozan and Lowry over those two.

The Celtics are highly over-rated. Outside of the Brooklyn pick that isn't even guaranteed as it's the draft...what exactly is there of substance to build on that's so special?

They are overhyped by the media and the likes of Bill Simmons that has and always will always want something special in Boston.
Their future lies on the BKN picks, Brown and Smart. IT and Horford are nothing but a bridge in the gap. They may or may not win without both but they are showing the ropes for the young guys how to be good enough to reach the playoffs. You'd rather have your young guys experience winning while developing their game than being stuck in the thread of mediocrity that could lose their motivation and drive to win. Teams like Sixers, Wolves, Kings have been tanking for years longer than the Celtics and have no show for it. We've been talking "potential" for so long now that it haven't even amounted to wins.
If the Celtics win with IT, awesome. If not, they still many have options. What option teams like Toronto have if in worse case, Lowry bolts out or plays like poop later due to age? That's the beauty of having draft picks.
Let's not talk like the Toronto stars are spring chickens. Their role players are young but Lowry is aging and Derozan have similar window to IT and Horford. Celtics have the BKN to lean on and by the time IT and Horford decline/leaves the young guys will be ready to take the torch from them. Who is gonna succeed Lowry if he declines? Joseph?
