Several of the deadliest airstrikes in recent weeks have targeted schools and hospitals filled with refugees as part of a deliberate strategy, according to a new investigation by The Guardian. Previously considered "sensitive sites," these locations are now also categorized by the military as "heavy centers", and the procedures for authorizing airstrikes against them have been relaxed.

The IDF spokesperson often claims that Hamas command centers are located in schools, but an Israeli intelligence source told us that this is an exaggeration. "We bomb schools and kill children because the lives of Gazans are seen as worthless, they’re viewed as an obstacle."

An Israeli security source who served in Gaza in recent weeks told us that the basic logic of “Operation Gideon’s Chariots” is to exert pressure on the civilian population by systematically destroying Gaza.

"Instead of in-and-out operations, it’s enter and flatten. Every area the IDF takes, the IDF flattens. The idea is ultimately to push everyone into Al-Mawasi and turn a single neighborhood into the home of two million people, fenced in and controlled by the military. The army doesn’t use the words 'ghetto' or 'ethnic cleansing,' but it’s a de facto ghetto."

Y., a soldier who recently returned from reserve duty in Rafah, described the army’s demolition methods to us. "I secured four or five bulldozers [from another unit], and they demolished 60 houses per day. A one or two story house, they take down within an hour; a three or four-story house takes a bit longer," he said. "The official mission was to open a logistical route for maneuvering, but in practice, the bulldozers were simply destroying homes. The southeastern part of Rafah is completely destroyed. The horizon is flat. There is no city." Y.’s testimony is consistent with those of 10 other soldiers who served at different times in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon since October 7, and who spoke with us.
