That's not why men care about body counts. There's a deep biological reason. It's to ensure paternity of the child. For most of human history we didn't have DNA testing. So men had no clue whose child it was whenever a woman gave birth. The only way to ensure you were the father was to get with a woman who was a virgin.

When damn near every man on earth since the beginning of time has the same preferences (i.e. virgins over hoes for marriage) then those preferences go beyond conscious decision making.
