Apple Music has a third as many paying subscribers as Spotify

Apple CEO Tim Cook has given an update on the adoption of Apple Music, the company's streaming music service — it has over 15 million users right now, with 6.5 million of those paying $9.99 a month and 8.5 million still on the three-month free trial. That makes it a smaller but significant competitor to Spotify which, last we heard in June, has 20 million paying customers.

Apple Music went live at the end of June, so October is the first full month that Apple has started collecting payments. It's more than possible that a lot of people forgot to cancel their subscriptions and were charged for October, though, which might have skewed the figures. And people are still starting to use it for the first time — in August, Apple's Eddy Cue said that the service had 11 million trial subscribers, meaning it's grown by 4 million non-paying users since.

It'll take a while to assess the popularity of the oft-maligned service, then, but Cook himself seemed pleased enough with its progress tonight. "It's going really well," he told Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Gerard Baker on stage at WSJD Live. "Fortunately, lots of people are liking it."

Looks like a flop to me knowing that most folks use the free ad-supported version of Spotify.

Spotify is such a failure of a business

like nikkas don't get it at all

they haven't had a profit yet and they will never make a profit unless they lose all their free subscribers that they are not profiting off off period

apple music is gonna destroy this, spotify is just gonna be like napster or some shyt

like srsly this article came out 4 months ago this year

you think their situation has changed with more competition in the marketplace? no

Spotify financial results show struggle to make streaming music profitable

Thats damn good.

Anyway...
...is there a difference between services?
Im trying out Apples now...wondering if Spotify is better in some way.

Spotify is winning the battle while losing the war. They aren't making money and really only "win" due to a free option. Apple has the money and artists to win long term but it'll take awhile.

I prefer Spotify as it has a more user friendly interface. Apple best chance is to get people who don't use Spotify. Most users are not going to switch over when they already have thousands of music saved.
