An anonymous reader points out this opinion piece by professor Adam Grant that questions how useful the current college application system is and suggests some alternate methods to gather information about candidates.

"The college admissions system is broken. When students submit applications, colleges learn a great deal about their competence from grades and test scores, but remain in the dark about their creativity and character. Essays, recommendation letters and alumni interviews provide incomplete information about students' values, social and emotional skills, and capacities for developing and discovering new ideas. This leaves many colleges favoring achievement robots who excel at the memorization of rote knowledge, and overlooking talented C students. Those with less than perfect grades might go on to dream up blockbuster films like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg or become entrepreneurs like Steve Job"

if the bolded is true. Then it's trying to tell you something. College really doesnt want the later. they want the former for a reason.

Go thru college , get a piece of paper, and end up being a worker bee(some paid well, some not, others land some where in between).

Dont complete college or dont go, but have the hustle, desire, creativity, you can still create the next blockbuster film or become the next steve j.

Continuing on the other thread about math and test scores... again... the system is broken.

I've been looking at completing a PhD. I got a BA in 2006. MBA in 2010. Past few years, have been working for my self.

I went to a big school with large class sizes. I never stood out to kiss any professor ass. I didn't join any organizations. I just worked hard and graduated Magna and Summa Cum Laude.

And again.... working for myself now... the biggest hurdle from my past school and current work life is how the fukk do I find 3 people to recommend me for an application, especially when they want academic references? 8 years out of undergrad, 4 out of grad, and owning a business for 2 years...

I've asked for recommendations in the past and professors basically just said you write it, I'll sign it. And it was always incredibly uncomfortable because they barely had a clue who I was.

System is shyt.
