Are commercials pointless now?

Like I can see commercials for certain things like movies and whatnot, but why do places like McDonalds n Walmart need commercials? Do we really need a commercial advertising the same nacho cheese doritos?

Im pretty sure Walmart can not air a commercial for 2 years and they'll still be packed as fucc every single day
