I actually think I saw them talking about this in TLR, but it's a question I've long pondered.

I didn't attend one, but have close friends and fam who did and the grads commonly reflect, saying the environment didn't prepare them for the world and was unrealistic, and in some cases pandering. Also said the prevailing message in the early years is "you're blackness makes you a very special flower."

What ya'll think?

:mjlol: Name one college that prepares you for the real world.

Y'all won't want to hear this but if your family or friends don't have connections 9/10 times you're wasting time and money taking out a loan for college

:childplease:Only A TROLL would ak this question.

:francis:Nobody would say BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY,a jewish influenced school is outdated.

How about Notre Dame, Or Harvard for the white protestants. those schools are so outdated right:aicmon:

:why:of course Africans need a place to educate. If we can get more blacks interested in investing into these schools, maybe we can get the white influence out of our schools. But the crackers are doing their best to shut that shyt down anyway. And stupid topics like this doesn't help.

In the Silver Lining
absolutely not they are an important institution in Black America and pump out many of our STEM products

Not just STEM but all types of disciplines.

My hope is that we can least keep 100 HBCUs, cause every 2 years, another seems like its about to fall off the cliff. Even if you went to a PWI, you should still want to protect this true African American living cultural/educational legacy. Name something else that is tangible and over 100 years old that African Americans can collectively say this is "ours"??? I've had friends making good money that went with me to an HBCU that said they would never send their kid to an HBCU....and I'm just like :beli:.

So much history has went through these institutions and more is still being made today. We sold BET, Ebony Magazine, Famous Amos Cookies, and now a lot of "our" inner city historic neighborhoods....can we at least support and keep our cotdamn universities.... shiiit. :aicmon::shaq2:

College in general is outdated and a scam.
OUtdated? Sure. Are you a fukin idiot if you don't go? 100%. I think people are jaded by the price right and lack of opportunity right now. IMHO take the first 2 years in CC and transfer to a state school. That's 100000000000000x better than trying to take on the world with only a HS diploma.

Yes, I'm sure. Now, I know that plenty of people have had experiences to the contrary, but college didn't do shyt for me. Once I hit the "real world" I realized that networking was more important. Now networking and college may be better than just networking, but I think that for the price, college is literally a scam. Especially in the information age, which brings me to the point of it being outdated. It was nothing that I learned in college that I couldn't learn on my own through online resources.

To be fair, I have a pretty general degree (business) which no doubt helps shape my opinion. But you can literally learn how to code online now. You don't actually need to go to law school to be able to take and pass the LSAT. There are plenty more examples.

Also, the cost of this shyt is inflated. Look at the price of textbooks, it's a fukking racket. Unless it's a trade school, I think college is largely unnecessary. If I would have known then what I know now, I would have skipped college. I would rather have started at the bottom somewhere, gained experience, and worked on establishing professional connections. They brainwash you with all that college bullshyt while in grade and high school, but that shyt ain't doing nothing but selling dreams. We're pretty much getting pimped by the system.

Edit: I misread and thought you were asking if I was sure, my bad. My comments still stand though.

You may notice that I asked a question. I didn't say they were a scam, or that I think they are a scam. I asked a question based on some feedback I've gotten from alum's and wanted to see HL's take on it. Please understand the difference before coming at my neck.

like I said FOR SURE it's a scam. You don't get what you pay for, and YES with the exception of a few VERY SMALL things anything you learn in college you can learn on the job, personally I'd prefer someone who learned the ropes on the job vs from a book...that being said the reality of the situation is that companies still use degrees as a measuring stick and A LOT of companies still deny things like promotions or even the opportunity to interview based solely on the lack of a degree.

Having know and been a hiring managers who receives anywhere from 50-100 job applications the first very simple means by which I, and most people i know, filter that list down is by looking for degrees. :manny: it is what it is, which is why I advocate going through a 2 year CC program that transfers into a 4 year degree.

I've known to many people in "Tech" positions that knew more then their higher paid "Analyst" co-workers.

Get that degree, EVENTUALLY it'll pay for itself.

Depends. What did they major in? Are they doing what they studied?
I went to two predominantly white schools. One was a private technology university, but I majored in business. The other was a state university, and I majored in computer science. The business major prepared me for jack squat. I walked out unprepared for the world. I ended getting work in business management type of work but I got laid off. I found it very hard to find another job. The one thing I discovered while job searching at that time was there was like a 100 to 1 ratio of computer jobs to business management jobs. And the computer jobs paid more.
The second degree I got gave me actual skills that I used in my future jobs in IT.
Whatever your first degree isn't a waste. It's a stepping stone. It may not necessarily prepare you for the world, like engineering or accounting, but you can leverage that degree to move on to something better. In my case, the business degree was pointless as it pertains to getting a computer science degree, but I pursued a second bachelor's degree so a lot of my credits transferred over. I was able to complete my computer science degree in two years.
You walk out of an HBCU with a bachelor's degree, use it as a stepping stone. Get a teaching license from another school, get a master's degree, PhD, JD, MD, another B.A. degree. Join the military as an officer, skip being a soldier and start getting paid at the next level from the git go. Whatever you do, leverage what you have.

Why did you use an inflammatory word like "scam"? The feedback you mentioned doesn't imply anybody was scammed to me.
