Observation has to do with your personal awareness to a situation. You don't have to just observe something with your eyes. You have 5 (6 for some) senses. All those are capable of making a superficial observation. You can superficially analyze someone's words, anything. Being superficial is about accepting something at face value whether it's words, physical bodies, ideas, smells, sounds and the like.
