It wasn't like that at all back in the day. I think you're forgetting that the vast majority of the people whose stories and biographies exist in the modern consciousness were either incredibly wealthy or incredibly accomplished. Not to mention there were an incredible amount of charlatans back in that day.
Being a polyglot is not at all uncommon, nor is artistic ability (go to DeviantArt and you'll find a few thousands hyperrealistic painters who could outdo Ingres), nor is the ability to play four instruments (I can do that), nor is fermenting alcohol (there are many, many people in state and federal prison who can do this), nor was navigation quite as incredible as you're making it sound.

those guys solved the relative easier problems. the things that are left to be invented or problems to be solved are much more complex. not taking anything from those earlier guys though.
