I view Somalis as Black and so have the majority I’ve met but theres also quite a few who don’t.

They use the reasoning that in Africa you identify as your nationality/ ethnic group and that they werent slaves.

One thing I’ve noticed about Somalis compared to the other “top” Black groups like AAs, Jamaicans, Nigerians etc is that whilst every group participates in nauseating nationalist pride, yours can be very and very obnoxious at times.

Where part are you from? In my exp, theres no clear consensus but most agree that they are Black(cause thats what everyone is taught here) and some don’t.

They roll with their own folk a lot but thats cause theres more cultural difference between them compared to Caribbeans/West Africans.

Only Somali people that don’t consider themselves black I’ve met have been online like somalispot folks. Stuff you read on twitter but the vast majority do.


I would caveat that by saying nearly all of them refer to non Somali blacks as a whole as ‘black’. There’s a word for it - madow - but when talking to non Somalis they would just say black.

And it’s meant in an ‘other’ type way. Likey they would say something like ‘my uncle was the first person in our family to have a black wife.’

By that they meant he was the first to marry a non Somali black person. Which is a bit off. As far as I know no other Black Country has their language setup like that.

Somalis are 95-100% black. My cousin just did a test on 23andMe and she came back as 99.4% East African and 0.6% broadly Sub-Saharan African.

Actually yes. Somalis literally don’t get along with anybody, black, white or brown.

But we all have cultural flaws whether you’re black white or brown so I’m not talking down on y’all

I do consider Somalis black. You have your light brights but so do new world blacks so we don’t think anything of it here in the west. Maybe other Africans might think you’re less black or african because of it though
