I'm in the physical security field, executive protection, site security, etc and I've been studying for my ASIS PSP certification. The more I look online though, I'm seeing that it's experience more than the letters behind your name that propels your career. I've done correctional officer, extradition, been a personal bodyguard, you name it. I'm just wondering if its worth paying $400 or more for these tests that are offered online or to go to schools just to receive certificates. Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Certs will get you the door but that's really all the is, the problem with the certs hustle is that

1. Companies rarely train these days so you need more than book knowledge and its a bit difference between Home and Company equipment/configurations...
2. When everyone hustles certs it dies down and the pay is less (MCSE) is a good example...

Certs will help but if you could go to school I would do that instead first but not all of us have that option. I'm an older breh getting shyt together and money is low so I'm hustling certs right now (CCNA) and I want to complete this shyt in under a month since I'm living off unemployment right now I can put 8 hours a day in this shyt.

Experience trumps all but if you got the 400 to blow I would see how that helps.... nothing trumps a higher degree though.

I have 12 years of experience in various areas of security. I'm first aid, life saver, etc certified as well. I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I don't want pay $400 and only get recognized by the company that offers it. Not many people even know about ASIS. I'm gone just continue to study and learn the terms and put it on my resume.

Certs help if you don't have a degree. And certs help when going for a job and other applicants don't have it. Unless your job requires it or you really have no experience in that field, then you don't have to do it. Experience trumps all.

The problem is that the gatekeepers known as HR use certs as the baseline for choosing candidates. The problem with that is that I have run into alot of people who have a whole alphabet worth of certs and I wouldn't let them manage my PC. I'm for them but if you can prove to me that you know the material I don't care if you have a piece of paper.

It does but you have to remember the way the game is played. A lot of times people in HR don't know anything about IT so if you don't have the certs they might overlook your resume no matter how much experience you have.
