I used to want to get into coaching...but those hours and that pay...ugh...you have to REALLY love it to grind like that

I coach my nephew's soft toss team...and some of the things little kids do in baseball has me :lolbron:

but if you really want to coach figure out what level you want to do it at and start there...if you want college then find a grad assist job...if you want high school get a teaching certificate and go snatch up a job...because it's not that easy to jump to different levels...those coaches move in different circles for the most part and the skill requirement is different

If your interested in doing it any level be prepared to live that army brat life. One of my boys has coached at two high schools in the last three years as an assistant. He could probably be a HC at any of the local hs, played three years minor league ball and college summer leagues. He played at the cape, top college summer league. Waiting for that one job.

One of my other boys is working at another college in california, he has moved twice in the last three years as well. His resume speaks for itself.

I would love to coach at a local hs, but they require you to be certified teacher. No way I am leaving my engineering salary for a teachers salary.

Be prepared to move around, enjoy low pay and lots of hours with some kids who think you don't know shyt. Best ages to coach are 12-15.

I'm an assistant wrestling coach at a junior high school near my hometown (I help out at the high school too) and I love it. I look forward to every practice/match/tournament that we have, even though some of the kids are struggling and we've lost by some pretty lopsided scores.

The only thing I dislike is that some of the other coaches are difficult to work with. The head coach has made it clear that he has no interest in actually teaching the kids how to get better. One of the assistants tries to push unorthodox techniques that are rarely used at an elite level (he doesn't realize that his type of moves are absent from the elite level because they don't actually work against elite wrestlers). He gets emotional every time I explain this to him so I just let it go now that the season is almost over.

Other than the minor issues with the coaches, I love coaching. It's my favorite sport, I understand every aspect of it, and it makes me feel good to show a new technique and watch the kids use it successfully in a match. I'm looking to get a head coaching position within the next year or two.

HS, College assistant??? Anyone?

How'd you get started and how you enjoy it?

I coach high school football in ohio

I was playing football at the university of Toledo and tore my knee up. I still wanted to be in football, so I joined one of the local high school coaching staffs.

The first thing I will tell you is that you have to love it to do it. I barely make jack shyt for money, it comes out to be around 8 cents per hour. Between school and football, you wont have time for anything else during the season.

I have been fortunate to work with some really good coaches who know their shyt and teach you how to be a better coach

the most important thing to being a good coach is work ethic. You have to put a ton of hours in.
