My wife and I were set on leaving the states by 2027-28 but now that she's pregnant she's having second thoughts. She's worried about not having support/not being able to find a social group and safety.

I haven't let on about how pissed this has me because I don't want her stress levels any higher than necessary while she has our kid growing in her but WTF this was something major we both agreed on. Smh

Anyway does anyone have kids they raise outside of the states? Please drop info, e.g. things you didn't think about before moving, pros and cons, etc.

I've done research but hearing first hands accounts >>>>

No funciona con los niños del norteamericanos?
:jbhmm:
There’s very good private schools in Colombia and some super wack ass public ones.

I went by Juan Pablo II High school yesterday shyt made Fair Eastside look like Harvard eventhough kids were wearing uniforms.

There’s plenty of Expat family support groups.

I can see you waiting or even reconsidering if you don’t have a country in mind at the moment nor did super research but if you did some research there’s community abroad. The only issue is that almost no where outside of america will you get Black American history education. I want to start a book club giving Black History books to Black Children overseas.

Where were you planning on going and do you both have solid job prospects there?

Idk breh I’m on her side until we get more details. Can’t be raising a family on vibes
word. I’d be reluctant to bring an Infant overseas.

That being said there’s international schools all over and Jamie Gruber asked Chat GPT if a top ten Dominican educated student would have a harder time getting into Harvard over a Top Ten american student and Chat GPT told him the foreign student who speaks different languages would be seen more favorably.

So take that for what it's worth. Right now donnie is trying to stop foreign students from going to Harvard. If you’re kid grew up overseas he wouldn’t be considered “foreign”. under this designation

The places we narrowed it down to are Johannesburg, Accra and Panama City. Before she got pregnant we were going to visit all the places by the end of next year. She can teach English and she's done it before in Seoul. I can get a job in Accra and Panama City. I have friends in Accra too but she's not too fond of the idea of it but agreed to have it on the list just because of my connections to it. With Panama City I would have to change companies and then transfer to PC and I'm already speaking to recruiters there and could be st the new job in a month if I wanted. Johannesburg is more difficult. She could still get a job with her experience but I would have to figure it out and I most definitely would before I made a move I just haven't looked into it because Johannesburg is the place I'm just tolerating the possibility on the list. She has make believe online friends she talks to regularly but she's never met in person who live there though.

I mentioned the options above. As far as our kids learning about AA history, we'll handle that. We're already building a at home curriculum. We won't just be handing our babies over to strangers and crossing our fingers about them learning what we think they need to know. Also, thats a great idea about the book club/books. What made you passionate about that?

OP, I’m in the process of moving my family overseas as well. We were planning on moving this summer but because of our visas, we are pushing back to November.

My daughters are 5 and 2 years old. My 5 year old is on the spectrum. Luckily, we are able to get her help with an American company. I have TriCare so my medical insurance isn’t too bad. The only issue is I have to pay everything up front then get reimbursed. Normally takes 2-3 weeks.

School was our biggest concern. We found three great international schools though. My biggest issue is the school we want has mostly Japanese students. The other two schools have mostly American kids but aren’t as highly rated.

I’m not worried about the rest. I work out there already. My Wife doesn’t work but has a degree. She can teach if she wants. We will work on finding a hustle so we can stay beyond my 5 year contract.

Let me know if you have any questions. If I can think of anything, I’ll post on here.

I linked up with a few people through Reddit who are using the same type of visa I’m using. I got put on a WhatsApp group chat. Reddit has a wealth of info for expats moving to some countries. Reddit and Facebook are great resources.

Thank you. I'll definitely pick your brain going forward.

The international school prices are crazy, right? The schools I looked at are shytting on many colleges with their fees.:wow:

If you did some research then you’re good. Generally speaking I’d still wait till at least five or six to move based on the health care system.

But based on what you said I’d pick Panama city unless you have a very strong network in Accra. I’d wait till year 6 if I were sold on Ghana based off of what you’re saying here.

Having said all that there’s tens of thousands of american kids growing up overseas having young children abroad you wouldn’t be alone. The average expat is a government employee not a so called “passport bro”. or sexpat.

You could hit up the local US embassy for advice on schools and private doctors.

Not just reddit even though Reddit is a decent clearinghouse of legit starter information Facebook groups are “better”. despite the obvious capping on shills but still basically a ton of on the ground expert advice. The best of all outside of meeting with people on the ground is what’sapp groups.

The overall cost of living is cheap but you’re going to elite schools that will set them up to go to college in the states.

If you don’t care about that meaning you expect that your kid might want to be a full citizen of the country you’re going on or you want to save some coin in the short term just send them to a regular Private school without the international aspect.

What International Means is SAT prep or whatever standard is required of a euro school for example there’s a German International school in my town obviously that is set up for someone who is thinking of going to Heidelberg so they’ll need to speak German and have German style classes so they could take their College enterance exam.

But going to Nursery school doesn’t really require taking the kid to an International nursery ( again there’s english nursery schools near me) but you don’t even need International style courses until High school If the kid has the basics down pat.

Your immediate concern is having access to the best pediatric care that you can get.

I know 4 people over all and 2 I know well. One of those people wants me work with him if I move but it be a risk because it's entrepreneurial and eating what you kill is sexy until you have a kid who can't eat "I tried". Honestly the front runner in my mind is PC and if I buck on Johannesburg PC will be her choice too, so that's where my focus is gonna mostly be but I'm still putting my feet down everywhere before choosing.

2030-31 is way longer than I wanted but you really made me think with that health care line. Safety and development of our kid is paramount.

The more answers that come to this thread the more I get her hesitation.:russ:

We're still getting out of here though.
Just letting you know she got pregnant before on purpose. :hubie:

She got pregnant because we both wanted to start a family. Granted her getting pregnant immediately after getting off birth control was unexpected.:pachaha:
