Are there any well known black video game journalists who don't use a gimmick?

The only one I knew of was N'Gai Croal who wrote for Newsweek. He now owns a video game consulting company called Hit Detection.

The only other black person involved in video games journalism that I know of is HipHopGamer, who obviously is using a "hip-hop" gimmick. Are there any relatively well known black video game journalists who come off as just a person who writes about video games and happens to be black?

well to be far, you kind of need some sort of 'gimmick' to set you apart from the rest, regardless of race. I think the problem is the 'gimmick' is often based on some stereotype

The state of video games journalism is so poor that writing quality articles should be enough to set you apart. But you're right about the about the gimmicks being based on stereotypes, especially when it comes to black people.

I would like to know about Youtube personalities and bloggers, gimmicks or not, because I really don't know of anyone else besides the people in the OP
well I was speaking on them as far as who needs a gimmick. although I can't think of an example that's black

people like "Angry Joe" come to mind, with his "angry" gimmick

outside of competitive games, the top streamers are some of the worst video gamers ive ever seen :why:

especially when they play a game that they havnt been playing for years on end :why:

I think you should have a mix of both.. you have to be entertaining and good but more times than not the more entertaining person will have a lot more viewers than the good player. Only exception like I said is competitive games like Starcraft

it's definitely a skill to be able to actually keep people entertained while watching your stream. it's kinda like commentating football or whatever, where you need to find something to say even if there's nothing really going on
