a so-called classic by these rappers, 9 times out of 10, is really a 4-mic joint at best.
a so-called 4.5 is really a 3.5
a so-called 4 is a 3.

theyre not graded on the same scale. dudes be having wack hooks, meh flows, weak deliveries, boring tracks, half-ass beats, etc etc

imagine if a prime jay-z made an album like "black on both sides", all "content" aside. he'd be ridiculed.

The funny thing is that the next generation of "real hip hop" spawned by Pete Rock/Premo/Dilla/etc resulted in an entire decade of forgettable production, wack paper thin drums, and a complete dearth of music anyone would want to hear live. Being a good rapper doesn't mean you make good rap music. I like some Cunninglyngists, Murs, Immortal Technique etc but a lot of that shyt does not bump in the whip and sounds weak in hindsight.

Conscious rap gets a huge pass from fans as a protest of mainstream rap at the time (50 Cent/Wayne/etc). In reality a lot of that shyt was boring and the equivalent of a Led Zeppelin cover band. No originality and no ability to surpass what it was mimicking.
