You are far better off focusing on your own shortcomings or amplifying your strengths.
You can move 1000 steps towards whatever goals you desire in a short period of time by focusing on yourself. Whereas you will take many more steps and a longer period of time moving towards your goal by competing with others. I'd even go as far to say you have not fashioned out any meaningful goal if you are a competitive person. Your meaning comes from being slightly better than the next person and that is nothing worth living 70-100 years for.
Create a concrete, non-vague goal based on your wants or desires and allow your everyday actions to be centered around moving towards that specific goal.
