With the exception of indians who typically never wanna go back , the rest of em went back depending on what their family did for work, or owned. Typically it's the ethnic minorities or poor from over there that want to stay here.
For example many of those fleeing china are from ethnic minorities who number in the tens of millions and are actively repressed by the larger , better resourced han Chinese (musuo, Cantonese, manchus, hui, sibe, tibetan, etc).
The desire to stay was also prevalent from the more economically stable nations too , beyond those with family resources. For example , lots of singaporeans, Japanese, and Koreans went straight back home after undergrad or grad school in our engineering dept. Same could be said for the western Asians in the middle east.
