ya need to stop getting pissed at the word morena/moreno....it literally means brown, and when spanish ppl say it there's no racial undertone behind it. That goes for the word "negro" as well when its pronounced in Spanish. Negro means black, that's it. Even an "all white" dominican family will give the nickname "moreno", "negro" to the family member with the darkest shade even if he doesn't necessarily look black. I know for some of ya it's hard to grasp that concept, espicially the word "negro" but there truly isn't any racism behind those words


NOW, the words you should 100% get mad at is "cocolo" and "prieto". I got to a argument with a coworker couple years back for saying "Maldito prieto" to a black dude he had an altercation with. It literally translates into "fukking darkie"...when I hear that word, it sounds a lot like the N word with the hard ER. Same goes for cocolo, not sure where it originates from but always sounded racist to me

No, she didn't say it to me, that's what they called her. I felt bad about it bc she was an older lady and she looked so "" about it, i felt they were being disrespectful. I actually didn't know the term could be used pejoratively until that experience.

I think Cocolo is the Black English West Indian People that came to the Dominican Republic to work the sugar cane fields.
