They can make him less prominent and adjust plot points in consequence.
They can also make his presence more contested by other characters.

There are plenty things writers can do to appease the angry crowd by diluting the original vision. That's easy.

I remember when them cacs modded CJ to be white for San Andreas. They also replaced Miles’s model with Peter’s. For SM2 and the Miles Morales game lol. They’ll do the same for this game too just watch. I also remember RE5 had some racist mods.
