Weird...
out of homage and respect and sheer enjoyment online...
I have to put it like this:
Cod4 > Call of Duty 2 > Modern Warfare 2 > World at War
Every other Call of Duty, for me, is either bushes or bargain bin.
Why?
Cod 4 - It elevated the game and the industry to the perfect level. It wasn't too ovewhelming where the game felt different. It felt current and right. It was a smooth game that really offered an amazing single player experience and brought online FPS playing on a console to a level where...frankly...hasn't been elevated since.
The weapons were amazing (AK 74u and G3
), the map design (before the M203 glitch) was beautiful and as stated the game ran smooth.
Call of Duty 2 - I mean...wow. Single player wise, the D-day set piece has to be top 10 in all of gaming. With respect to the online, it was bar bones but that was par for the course at the time and it was the cream of the crop. Nothing like playing Capture the Flag or (My all time favorite) Search & Destroy at Burgundy or Carentan.
Modern Warfare 2 - It was just such a superb sequel to CoD4. It pushed the envelop with the kill streaks by fleshing them out and had just the right amount of arcade-ness action. I do think this was the beginning of the end also... How? Maps like Rust & Shipment became popular(much to my disdain) Absolute choatic run & gun shooting with no need for communication and strategy became the standard. Other than that, the game was beautiful. Also, it had one of the best CoD maps in my opinion - Invasion (Had the war torn city feel and its design prevented "noob tubing" better than most maps.
World at War - This was when I started hating anything NOT done by Infinity Ward. I started to truly despise Treyarch however as I look back...I realize that I actually had fun in this CoD iteration. Everything else was DOWN HILL.
Everything else - Jet packs, Terrible gun noise sound effects and the change in feel. What felt like a Call of Duty game years ago...to its core...does not feel like a Call of Duty game today. Evolution is important however evolution fixes the necessities...not add extra for no reason.
To the CoD Search and Destroy memories...fighting racist teams..talking shyt because the was no party chat...
