whoever said dude has no “bars” was spot on.

No real gems dropped, barely any wordplay, humor or wititness. No punchlines. Half the time dude ain’t even “rapping” just doing goofy ass voices and chants and shyt.

I will never understand how dude got such a strong following convinced he’s one of the best rappers ever. :mindblown:

Kendrick is a poet. Even at his best for me I never needed him to have one liners.

Sing about me isn't some shyt you can break down into bars, but it's a cohesive picture being painted with words very skillfully, I love it. But even as far back as S80, I could be impressed and admire the craftwork but I didn't really enjoy that album much save for a few joints. GKMC was an improvement but I didn't see or feel the perfect album that everybody thought it was, same with TPAB.

After that I just resigned to the fact that I only enjoy Kendrick in small doses. Still impressed, still very proud of him but I'm really far off from where most people seem to be on him and his legacy.

Sing about me is still one of my favorite songs of his.

I’m a rap fan. I need beats and rhymes. So much of his catalog is far removed from that.

The songs i like of his, I REALLY like. Some of my all time favorites, but there’s only like 2 or 3 of them on each album. The rest is almost unlistenable to me.

I agree the whole pompous aesthetic surrounding Duckworth's music is tiresome and feels inauthentic at times but I don't get some of these critiques, particularly from dude Napoleon quoted... I mean he can get the fukk outta here with this "baby Panther devoid of flaws" narrative acting like Lesane didn't have some superfluous bullshyt on his music too; "post-pac neocolonial epoch"?? :mjlol: Man sit your dumb ass down lol. Also I wonder who are these three “globally recognized ʽconscienceʼ rappers” and how the fukk does Drake fit this description.

There are no quotables on this album

look at social media or even look in the booth. Nothing is being quoted

I read the humorous tweets first and thought they were good/funny.

Then i got to the part where he said he was gonna get “serious” and that shyt was more pompous and inauthentic than anything he was trying to accuse kendrick of.:francis:

What is a quotable? Because given that today it basically means whatever inane IG caption bars rappers got that people like...I'm not taking that criticism from yall.

There are plenty of great lyrics on the album, on damn near every track.

Kendrick’s bars are the IG captions :francis:

Post some good examples of wordplay that impressed you on the album.

Memorable lines, bars that stick out,

I see dudes saying "I WANT to like him"...but why?

You don't HAVE to like anybody. Don't let the mainstream machine force you to fit a square peg into a round hole. You've had a big enough sample size of dudes music to know that he's just "aight" to you.

Just make a playlist off each album of the songs you like and keep it moving. Have a playlist of 8-10 songs of Lamar's songs you like and throw the rest in the trash.

Just because somebody is in the mainstream and a whole bunch of other people like that person, doesn't mean YOU gotta like the person.

Most people are sheep..... don't be one of em.

I get it. I’m torn bc kendrick has 3 undeniable classics in a row for me. I *don’t* co-sign people who say his music is unlistenable, but with THIS album he gave them ammo.

Prime examples are the lgbtq anthem Aunty Diaries, and the sexual assault anthem Mother Sober…like those are songs made for white folk who are afraid to NOT like songs they think they’re supposed to like. This was made for the Grammy academy.

It’s also made for shea butter twitter. It reminds me of that meme of dude trying to get his girl back and he like ‘babe I’m gon go see the man (therapist) you told me about’. This album sound like how your homie talks way different when his girl around.

I honestly think jay z influenced this after 4:44, which was a similar ‘lay myself bare’ type album , except it’s not a cohesive succinct 10 songs produced with soul samples from NO ID…kendrick lyrically or cleverness-wise isn’t jay z…jay z doesn’t do accapella monologue raps…and kendrick isn’t 50+
