im mexican, in 2nd grade i was reading these ancient civilization books at school, the inca, the aztecs, the mali empire.
in school i was usually put in the back of the room (and given busy work, the teacher would maybe interact with me once a day) every year because i did poorly in school
so from an early age I felt that "me vs them" atmosphere primarily against white teachers. I read primarily history books since 2nd grade, watched Malcom X, read about the KKK
and anti Mexican sentiments.
i remember my kindergarten teacher a black lady, in the late 80s. one of the best! i wouldnt have teachers like that until high school.
little by little i realized my peoples history was amazing and proud of it
as i read more and more about history and popular culture i realized goddamn, black people was at the forefront of everything that is "American Culture" and south america also
