Anyone that grew up in the 80s onwards isn't wearing hard flat shoes or formal attire unless for work. And after work you can't wait to get them off, so certainly not being worn casually and certainly not in old age. If you grew up on sneakers it's not happening.
And nowadays no matter where you go the elderly are all in sneakers.
