What is your opinion on funerals...?

If a human is just an animal (as per science) and we have no souls (as per science) what's the point of a funeral..?

I understand a funeral for religious people is to say goodbye to their loved ones, but if you are a true atheist to the core, what do you need a funeral for?

Why not just cremate the body (to save land) cry a little for the loss (in private) and then keep it moving....?

I have gone with self-proclaimed atheist to gravestones, and they had fesh flowers and talking to the gravestones, but I never thought about asking this question...

Why would an atheist visit the gravestone of a dead person...?

These are the things that make me believe that most of us have some kind of religion...Am I reaching...?

What in your premises makes you think that atheists don't have the right to say goodbye and/or remember the dead ?

Its for the living.

People need finality and closure.

Atheists aren't inherently nihilists

We like to respect the wishes of the dead...but it depends on the culture.

Not believing in a deity who watches you or you can talk to doesn't change any of this

Why would an atheist visit the gravestone of a dead person...?
Doesn't mean they'll "talk" to it.

In fact, you should ask why theists visit gravestones. They claim to be able to talk to their loved ones via prayer, which can be done anywhere. Why visit the gravesite to do it?

These are the things that make me believe that most of us have some kind of religion...Am I reaching...?
You're trying to assume atheists/non-believers don't have "value" or respect for symbolism or ritual...which is untrue.

TO be an atheist/unbeliever simply means you don't believe in a deity. Thats it. Period.

Nothing more or less. Anything after that is up to the person.

I think his question was asking why would you do that not asking if you have any right to do so. He's making out funerals to be a strictly religious ceremonies (which they aren't necessarily) so if that was the case, it'd make little sense for an atheist or non-religious person to partake in.

Atheists have feelings too. We don't believe in the silly promise of an afterlife but we believe in saying goodbye. To honour their life, to provide closure. To pay respect.

We're not fukking robots.

The problem is that people equate non-belief in a deity with nihilism :snoop:

I'm an existential-nihilst tho :troll:

That's the worst part about being an atheist. People just assume your life is empty and not worth living for, when in fact, it is starkly the opposite - the lack of belief opens up so many doors.

Exactly.........I am an agnostic and people look at me like there is something wrong with me. They think that I must like torturing people and surprised that I want to be married and have kids. Atheist and agnostic can be good parents, and have feelings.

If the person wants a funeral then they should get one. It's just a way of saying goodbye respectfully.

If a human is just an animal (as per science) and we have no souls (as per science) what's the point of a funeral..?
To respectfully say goodbye to someone that you love. Evens some animals cry after losing something they love. To just dump the dead person in the ocean or in some junkyard is disrespectful.

I understand a funeral for religious people is to say goodbye to their loved ones, but if you are a true atheist to the core, what do you need a funeral for?
Should we just dump the body in the ocean? A funeral is a respectful goodbye.

Why not just cremate the body (to save land) cry a little for the loss (in private) and then keep it moving....?
If the person wanted to be cremated then they should have it that way, and if they wanted a funeral they should have it that way. You can still have a gathering to pay respects to the person.

I have gone with self-proclaimed atheist to gravestones, and they had fesh flowers and talking to the gravestones, but I never thought about asking this question...
There is an emotional connection.

Why would an atheist visit the gravestone of a dead person...?
It is the last place you remember the person being. Why would you not? In your mind their body is still there.

These are the things that make me believe that most of us have some kind of religion...Am I reaching...?
